Standing outside the shambles that was once a magnificent church, Payton was questioning what he was about to do. Was it right? Walking into a place of God was supposed to be a religious experience, and here he was, ready to take what he could to get a small fire going. He had run out of supplies close to his dumpster home, and there would no doubt be plenty to scrap here. Not to mention the possibility of cushions from the pews for mats to sleep on, and candles to light the dark nights.
Releasing a sigh, Payton passed through the door that was amazingly still attached to it's frame. The only light came through the broken stain-glass windows. The parts that were in tact though filtered beautiful colors, ones that even Payton stopped to admire. “Wow...I almost forgot what colors were." Taking his gaze of the color spots on the floor, the young man moved to the alter. The massive wooden figure of Jesus that just so happened to remain standing sort of freaked him out in the sense that it appeared he was watching his every move. “Look Jesus..bro...you know I wouldn't do this if I didn't have to. I need to do what I can to live." When the statue didn't respond, or even blink, Payton laughed. More at himself then anything. “Yep I've lost it...talking to wooden Jesus." Moving up the stairs and behind the alter, Payton started his search for candles, or matches. He wasn't going to leave empty handed.

Half asleep, sitting in the balcony of the ruined church, was Brianna. She had figured this place was safe since the walkers seemed to have issues going up stairs, like they weren't smart enough to learn. It would only be a matter of time before not even height could save her skin. But for the meantime, this would do. She had just settled in and was almost asleep when the sound of footsteps below disturbed her. It had shocked her out of her somewhat tranquil peace of mind. Standing up, she tried to be as silent as possible as she walked to the edge of the balcony to look over the railing. Below was a boy, scuffling about like a rat looking for food. Was he alive? Or just another of those walkers?
Her silent question answered as the boy spoke to the statue of Jesus at the altar. With a smile, she let her left hand graze the railing as she walked towards the stairs, making certain her footsteps were audible. It wasn't too hard with combat boots but even so, she needed to get the kid's attention. "My, my, my. Stealing from a church are we? Don't think that's the best way to make life better," she said, her voice echoing off the walls like her footsteps. When she reached the stairs leading to the lower level, she started descending them, only speaking again when she had gone down two steps. "Make god angry and he'll screw your entire life up even more, didn't you know that?" She never stopped walking as she spoke, her voice completely serious both times but held that little note of sarcasm that was nearly undetectable. The echo of her voice fading into nothingness when she paused at the very bottom of the stairs.

At the sound of the voice, Payton ceased his rummaging. Coming out of his hunched searching position, the young man was careful to move slow as to not alert the young lady whom had addressed him Setting a bundle of candles that he had just located down on the podium before him allowed Payton to move his hands slowly into the air before resting them behind his head non-chalantly. “Well actually I do...I mean lets be honest for a second, what's left of life isn't a picnic." Taking a second to glance back at the statute, Payton wondered if what he had just said was enough to have him struck down where he stood, but when nothing came of his comment he looked back the the girl, clearly amused by the prospect of being smited.
“Besides, I think J-man and I have an understanding." Figuring that was all the explanation he needed, Payton picked up the candles he had found and stuffed them in his bag. There was no sense in walking away without them now. Turning to some stained wooden cabinets behind him, Payton continued the search one door at a time. All the while he thought conversing might be fun. Without turning his gaze to the female he posed the next topic. “So...living here proving to be okay? I ask because I've been living in a dumpster and although it's pretty safe it's not much for comfort. You do live here right?" It was silly to think that knowing would change anything about the situation. Which is why he was just asking for the sport of it. Besides, who knows when the next living being will show their face.

Leaning on the railing, she watched him silently as he replied in a rather relaxed manner. His demeanor alone earned him a faint smile but it quickly faded when he spoke. Deep in thought, she considered a few possible replies when he went back to searching for who knows what. The short silence broken when he spoke again. With a sigh she let her attention fall back to reality before speaking, "Are you really stupid enough to ask that? Why in the world would I live in a church when this is just a place to pass by?" She stepped closer to one of the windows and glanced outside for any movement.
Keeping her gaze outside, she continued. "Your attitude about this whole situation stinks. Did you find it in that dumpster of yours or was it just that outfit you found?" This time when she spoke, her words were soft almost half hearted like she knew this wasn't the time to be giving people an attitude. "No place is safe, especially if you stay still for too long. They'll find you one way or another. This church...its only good for maybe a couple nights, then your best option would be to find another place." As she spoke, she rested a hand next to the window before pushing herself away from the broken glass.
Feeling uneasy, she walked down the center of the pews, letting her hand brush along the wood. It was clear there was something on her mind but she wasn't going to share whatever it was. Pausing for a moment, she pointed to a drawer that the boy hadn't yet gotten to, "There should be a book of matches in that drawer. Maybe you could use them since you're so secure in that dumpster. I on the other hand would rather not draw the walkers to me."
Notes: Sorry for the shortness.. =(

Whatever friendliness that the girl had been giving off was now gone, but it was understandable given several circumstances, like the fact that he had intruded on her hiding space and started to rummage around. And two, he had probably come off sounding callous with his evaluation of their situation. “Oh well...sorry to have asked such a stupid question, I guess your right, about needing to move on after a while." Moving to the drawer she had pointed out, Payton dropped his bag to the floor so he could use both his hands to move the other useless nic-nacks in his way. “And what may I ask is wrong with my outfit?" It was clear in his voice that he was just messing with her. Without looking up to her he continued the conversation. “To be honest it's not my first choice either, but yah know." Pulling out the small match box he tossed it up in the air and caught it once more in the same hand. “Eureka, hey thanks for pointing me in the right direction." Picking up his bag once more, Payton placed the fire creating item within. “So hey, not for nothing but what's your name? I'm Payton, yah know like the football player?" It was a dumb comparison but it's the only one he could draw to memory at the moment. Walking closer to the girl, he hoped to keep up the civil nature of the meet and greet. Who knew, maybe he could make something of a new friend out of this. If she meant me harm then she wouldn't have helped me...sounds logical. Taking a seat in in of the Pews, Payton was hoping to seem less domineering. He was rather tall after all, not to mention a guy. The two did not work well together in a stranger meet and greet situation. Looking over to her he patted the space next to him. “I have a few chewy bars in my bag that I brought with me if you need a bite to eat." Smiling warmly while he dug out the small ration of food, Payton didn't mind sharing. It was more a less returning the favor she had offered him.

For some reason though, this whole situation felt surreal. "You're name's Payton, huh? Interesting name." To be honest, she didn't like the fact he was so friendly. It reminded her of the sister she had gotten separated from about a month ago. "My name really isn't all that important. If my assumption is right, most of those who have survived this will end up dead before things even start getting better."She watched Payton carefully. She didn't think he was threatening at all but safety was her first concern. He patted the spot next to him, making him look like a high schooler inviting a friend to lunch. Just the idea alone almost made her laugh. Keeping the serious look, the brunette shook her head. "Thanks for the offer but you should keep whatever food you get. Who knows when you'll find anything else." It was a foolish thing to do but in all seriousness there was a bit of truth to the words. At a time like this, she needed to be serious. It didn't matter what anyone thought of it either. Tags: Payton Words: 211 Notes: Sorry for shortness. Muse is bleh atm. Codes courtesy of Proboards Support.[/style][/style]
